Although there are encouraging signs of progress today, women are still under-represented at all levels in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) sectors worldwide, even though these subjects are considered essential to the world's economies.
According to UNESCO, only 33.3% of researchers worldwide are women, and only 35% of all students in STEM-related fields of study are women. Proof that efforts still need to be encouraged.
Women and Girls in Science Day is therefore a way of helping to combat the prejudices that can still plague the scientific professions, and showing girls and women that all paths are possible.
